I club di Premier league hanno deciso di blindarsi contro l’arrivo del fondo saudita Pif gestito dal principe ereditario saudita Mohammad bin Salman Al Sa’ud. 18 società hanno votato per impedire, almeno per il momento, che le squadre inglesi concludano accordi di sponsorizzazione con aziende che hanno rapporto con i proprietari dei loro club. La mossa a sorpresa, scrive il Guardian, arriva dopo che il fondo sovrano saudita è riuscito ad acquistare il Newcastle. Lo stesso club è stato l’unico a votare contro la nuova regola, mentre il Manchester City si è astenuto. Entrambe le società hanno messo in dubbio la legalità di questa nuova restrizione, che potrebbe diventare permanente. La norma colpirebbe anche il City, visto che lo sponsor principale del club è la compagnia aerea Etihad, di proprietà dello stesso presidente al-Mubarak.
